Working with Intensity

Got to work with the amazing @mattryandop yesterday on a emotional short film. Matt was a dream to work with as per usual creating beautiful images despite not ideal circumstances. We were shooting right next to a large river and busy road with people all around chasing the light for the best look and we powered through.

This piece had a lot of physicality and with the rushing river nearby I knew that I couldn't rely on the radio mic to deliver consistent sound continuity. My strategy is to get reliable Sync Atmos tracks so post can always have an option to add the river to the mix or use a sample to clean the audio where needed. On top of using my Sanken CS3e's off axis rejection to give me the best signal to noise ratio. A great mic which works wonders in loud environments.

I do remember one point where we shot a scene right near the water and instead of failing to get clean audio by trying to reject the audio, I worked with it and made sure that the river sounds were consistent and would be able to be cut with the coverage.

It was a tough environment to get audio but giving the actor the chance to really let loose with their performance is really important to how I like to work especially in highly emotional scenes which are difficult to replace in post.

I am happy that I got to work on this production,

which gave me more chances to work creatively to audio.

Till next time!
